Child trafficker remanded in custody

A CHITUNGWIZA woman, who is accused of allegedly recruiting seven juveniles from Karoi for purposes of prostitution under the guise she would get them jobs, has appeared in court.

Ivy Nyashanu (28) of Zengeza 1, was arraigned before Karoi magistrate, Moreblessing Makati, charged with two counts of kidnapping and contravening Section 8 (2), as read with Section 8 (4), of the Children’s Act Chapter.

Magistrate Makati remanded her in custody to June 3, for routine remand.

Prosecutor Progress Maponde told the court that on May 13, 2022, Nyashanu, called a 14-year-old juvenile, and informed her that she was looking for young females, who were willing to work in a boutique.

The juveniles, without suspecting anything sinister, briefed her friends aged 15, including the other two aged, 16, about the job offer from Nyashanu.

She is said to have continued pestering the juvenile, asking her to come to her home, with her friends, as job vacancies were still open.

The four juveniles then boarded a truck in Karoi and proceeded to Zengeza.

At around 10:30pm, on the same date, the four juveniles arrived at a service station in Zengeza, Chitungwiza, where they were picked by Nyashanu who took them to her place of residence.

On May 14, around 7pm, Nyashanu took the juveniles to Chikwanha Business Centre, where they got into a nightclub.

She told them that they were going to make money from men in the bar, by having sexual intercourse with them.

She had conversation with different men, who were inside the bar, and forced the juveniles to go with the men to the nearest lodge, where they were abused.

On May 15, in the morning, the juveniles went back to Nyashanu’s home and she told them they were going to make money through prostitution.

The court heard that Nyashanu went to organise more men, who would abuse the juveniles on different occasions and, in turn, the male adults were paying through her.

Nyashanu destroyed the phone SIM cards of the juveniles, fearing they could be traced. Later, one of the juveniles called her friend aged 15 and told her Nyashanu was organising some jobs for them.

This prompted her to team up with another juvenile, aged 13, and two others, and they boarded a truck and went to Chitungwiza.

Parents of the juveniles looked for their children, but to no avail.

They reported the missing children to the police at ZRP Karoi Urban.
