Chilumba joins FC Platinum

Sources at Mimosa Mine, the sponsors of the Zvishavane giants, confirmed that Chilumba was the team’s new coach.

The Zambian quit the colliery first team in October voluntarily after a poor run of results despite a good start to the season.

He opted to be in charge of the team’s junior development project and after he stepped down the team managed to defend its Castle Lager Premiership franchise.

This week Chilumba parted company with Hwange with club secretary and spokesperson Burzil Dube confirming Chilumba’s departure.

“He is now officially the FC Platinum coach. He begins training on Monday when the club’s pre-season starts. There will be trials that he will conduct as he wants to assemble a very strong youthful side that will gun for honours.

“We are happy to have such a good coach,” said a source close to the proceedings at FC Platinum in Zvishavane last night.

Chilumba comes to the club at a time when morale at the club is at its lowest ebb after a disappointing season last year in which they finished eighth.

However, they won two tournaments — the Charity Shield and Independence Trophy, their first pieces of silverware.

They failed to retain the second spot that Rahman Gumbo had left them on when he was fired.

In 2011, their debut season, FC Platinum were pipped to the title at the death by Dynamos.

Enjoying better financial support, FC Platinum will still rank among the favourites when the season starts at the end of March.

Efforts to get a comment from both the club and Chilumba last night were fruitless.

Sources at the mine however insisted that Chilumba was set to be unveiled to the new executive first before being introduced to players on Monday.
