Suspended NewsDay editor Constantine Chimakure has broken his silence over allegations of unethical journalistic practice, saying “the truth will prevail”.In a posting on his Facebook wall yesterday, Chimakure addressed the ongoing tiff between him and his employer – Alpha Media Holdings.
“What matters most at the moment is my wife, my two daughters and two sons and my mom, sisters and my bro(ther) Cut. The truth will prevail,” he said.
He did not address the allegations, but only expressed confidence that the truth would prevail in this case which has exposed the publication.
Observers say his post was a clear sign that he is disputing allegations levelled against him following the publication of two false stories concerning former South African president Thabo Mbeki and MDC-T leader Morgan Tsvangirai.
AMH said it suspended Chimakure because the two stories did not conform to set ethical standards. NewsDay carried the two stories last week under the headlines: “Mbeki speaks on Zim polls, chaotic land reform” and “Mugabe offers Tsvangirai VP Post.”
Both Mbeki and Tsvangirai denied the reports.
Mbeki accused NewsDay of peddling “falsehoods” by misreporting comments he made 10 days ago during a lecture at UNISA in Tshwane.
Mbeki’s spokesman said the publication had maliciously “twisted and manipulated the truth . . . to communicate falsehoods to achieve particular political outcomes.”
