Chimbetu commemoration gig comes to Manicaland

THE life of the late dendera-music proponent, shrewd lyricist and talented vocalist, Simon “Chopper” Chimbetu, will be celebrated in style as several musicians are lined up to perform at Pick and Save Supperrette next Saturday.
Heir to the dendera throne Suluman Chimbetu, controversial wordsmith Jacob Moyana and self-proclaimed Commander-in-chief Somandla Ndebele are all confirmed participants of the commemorative gig that will run all night through.

Chimbetu, who died on August 15 2005, has a rich discography that stretches from early 80s. Some of his chartbuster hits include Chautah Hoko, Window, Dzandipedza Mafuta and Kumagobo, among other songs.

This is the first time the three artistes have performed on the same turf in Mutare and apparently the gig has a lot of significance for each of the three musicians scheduled to perform at the entertainment joint.

Jacob “Munotidako” Moyana has never performed at the joint.

This will also be Somandla “Mafia” Ndebele’s second appearance, while for Sulu it will be an emotional moment of reunion with his fans after he last performed at the venue last year when the song Sean Timba was still a hot cake.

The show organiser and music promoter, Isau Mupfumi, said they were proud to be associated with the potentially explosive gig.

“Pick and Save is proud to work in unison with all artistes of all genres and we are proud to bring to Mutare one of the deadliest and rarest combinations.

“Moyana is a fast-rising entertainer who has a bright future while Mafia and Sulu are seasoned musicians. We are looking forward to hosting a memorable show,” he said.

Mukudzei Mukombe, fondly known as Jah Prayzah, headlines the venue’s Heroes Splash gig on August 10.
