A 39-YEAR-OLD man died Monday after allegedly assaulting his wife during a domestic dispute, and subsequently ingesting rat poison at their home.
Acting Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Chinyoka identified the deceased as Michael Usanga (39).
He said the incident occurred around 8pm following a domestic dispute between Usanga and his wife, Melody Chikoore (26).
“On September 28, around 8pm, Usanga had a misunderstanding with his wife. He allegedly assaulted her during the disagreement, after which she reported the matter at Chimanimani Police Station,” said Assistant Inspector Chinyoka.
After filing the report, Chikoore returned home and found the bedroom door locked from the inside. She detected the odour of rat poison originating from the room, and alerted law enforcement.
“Police officers attended the scene, smashed the bedroom door, and found Usanga unconscious on the bed. He was taken to Mutambara Mission Hospital for medical attention, but died upon admission,” he said.
Usanga’s body is awaiting a post-mortem examination, and police investigations are in progress.
