MINISTER of State for Manicaland Provincial Affairs, Cde Mandi Chimene, has said the late Mutare Teachers’ College principal, Mr Jason Muwandi, deserves provincial hero status.
Speaking at the United Methodist Church last Saturday, Cde Chimene said, it was puzzling to note why people like the late Mr Muwandi were not considered for provincial hero status.
“Before I entered this church, I had a short discussion with Zanu-PF provincial secretary for administration, Cde Kenneth Saruchera on why nothing was done to recommend that the late Mr Muwandi be declared a provincial hero. If Manicaland’s luminaries like the late Mr Muwandi are not conferred with provincial hero’s status, then who will become the heroes?” said Cde Chimene.
She showered praises on Mr Muwandi and said she had extended a special request to Government and Zanu-PF to consider posthumously making Mr Muwandi a provincial hero.
“I am sorry it came as an afterthought and had we thought correctly about it and on time we could have had an answer from above by now. Mr Muwandi did splendid work here in Manicaland in the area of education as all of you have heard from testimonies made by friends, relatives, workmates, colleagues and workmates,” she said.
Cde Chimene emphasised Mr Muwandi’s humility and said he never showed off nor wanted his power and position felt wherever he was. He was a humble man.
“Mr Muwandi was not an ambitious man. With his education and track record in professional responsibility and intellectual achievement, he could have campaigned to become Member of Parliament or joined politics through whatever door he wished. He could have. But he didn’t. Why? Because he was not ambitious.”
