A ZIMBABWE Republic Police’s Support Unit female officer last week scooped the sportsperson of the year prize at a belated end of year party held at Changadzi District.
Sarah Fireyi (27) who is stationed at Changadzi (Support Unit) was honoured for winning 14 gold medals in the police district, provincial and national competitions.
She was awarded a certificate and cash by the Officer Commanding Support Unit.
A total of 17 police provinces competed in different disciplines during the 2016 national competitions dubbed Commissioner General of Police Sports Gala held at Morris Depot.
Support Unit was crowned champions of the 2016 after having dominated in swimming, shooting and chess, leaving Harare Province in second position.
Other sporting disciplines were football, darts, chess, tennis, athletics, volleyball and netball.
However, Fireyi won gold medals in 100 and 200 meter sprint events, relays, triple jump, long jump, javelin and women soccer.
She expressed joy during the certificate and cash handover.
“Walking away with 14 medals from 1 481 females and 3 991 athletes who participated in last year’s games is something that I never dreamt of, but I realised that sporting is a talent within me.
“All it needed was hard work and commitment. 2016 was the first year that I ventured into sporting as a police officer, but honestly I have no dream or vision of where I am heading, considering that I am growing older each day.
“But for as long as I still have the energy, I shall continue being a sportsperson and show the world the talent in me,” said Fireyi.
