Congratulatory messages continue to pour in for President Robert Mugabe’s resounding victory during the harmonised elections with China and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea expressing their confidence in strengthening their relationships with Zimbabwe. In his message, Chinese president Mr Xi Jinping yesterday said he was delighted to hear of the re-election of President Mugabe.

“I extend my warm congratulations and best wishes. We have met twice before. You impressed me as an African national liberation leader particularly with your strong national spirit, deep affection towards the people and persistence in safeguarding national sovereignty and independence,” he said.

Mr Jinping said China supported Zimbabwe’s efforts to maintain stability and pursue development.

“I look forward to working together with you to further strengthen our traditional friendship, expand the bilateral co-operation and promote common development of our two countries,” he said.

DPRK President Mr Kim Yong Nam said the re-election of President Mugabe was an expression of the people’s great trust in him and expectations from him, and his party Zanu-PF.

“I take this opportunity to express our conviction that the traditional relations of friendship and co-operation between our two countries would continue to develop from strength to strength in the future.

“I sincerely wish you greater successes in your responsible work for consolidating national unity and bringing about economic development,” he said. Zimbabwe’s relations with China and the DPRK date back to the liberation struggle.
