THE Chinese embassy in Harare has extended support to landmine survivors in Zimbabwe through the donation of mobility assistive devices and food hampers, as well as sponsoring baseline surveys to assess victims’ needs.

The humanitarian gesture, carried out last week in Mutare, was done in partnership with Mine Victim Assistance Zimbabwe (MVAZ) and forms part of China’s ongoing “Hope Harbour” Programme, a flagship initiative that targets vulnerable grassroots communities with life-changing support.

Chinese Ambassador Zhou Ding said the donation was made to commemorate the 45th anniversary of diplomatic ties between China and Zimbabwe and to reaffirm China’s long-standing commitment to community development.

“China’s donation to landmine victims in Zimbabwe plays a crucial role in improving local livelihoods,” said Ambassador Zhou.

“By offering this support, China helps survivors regain independence and reintegrate into society.”

The beneficiaries, many of whom suffer from permanent disabilities caused by landmine explosions, received wheelchairs, crutches, walking frames and food packages.

The embassy also funded baseline surveys in Mutare to gather data for more targeted and sustainable interventions.

MVAZ welcomed the support, describing it as a “lifeline” for victims who face serious mobility challenges and limited economic opportunities.

This initiative comes just days after the embassy donated sewing machines and dressmaking tools to Teen Rescue Mission (TRM) in Harare, another key Hope Harbour project.

That donation targeted young girls and single mothers, equipping them with practical skills for self-reliance.

The Hope Harbour programme has become a hallmark of China’s diplomatic engagement with Zimbabwe, combining soft diplomacy with real, on-the-ground social support.

From vocational training to health interventions, it reflects a shift towards people-centred cooperation in China-Zimbabwe relations.
