THE Chinese ambassador to Zimbabwe, Zhou Ding, has announced the global economic powerhouse will import fresh citrus from Zimbabwe, starting this month.
Ding said this will create a significant foreign exchange income for Zimbabwe and improve the livelihoods of its farmers.
China has been supporting Zimbabwe in creating a self-sufficient and food surplus economy and becoming the breadbasket of Southern Africa once again.
It has drilled 1 000 boreholes across the country, providing access to clean drinking water for more than 400 000 people.
China will continue to encourage its companies to invest in Zimbabwe’s sustainable and high-quality development in the agricultural sector, having imported 22.6 percent more agricultural products from the country in 2022 than in the previous year.
Additionally, China has helped to build agricultural demonstration villages in Zimbabwe and organise bilateral training programmes to improve the production of small and medium-sized farmers.
“China is committed to helping Zimbabwe to develop its agricultural facilities, enhancing capacities and investment in Zimbabwe.
“China has helped drill 1000 boreholes across the country up till now, providing access to clean drinking water for more than 400 000 people,” he said.
“As the largest importer of Zimbabwe’s agricultural products, China imported US$657 million of agricultural products in 2022, up by 22.6 percent.
“We have sent four groups of senior agricultural experts to build agricultural demonstration villages in Zimbabwe, sharing China’s experience in livestock farming and horticulture planting,” he said
