China voices opposition to nuclear proliferation

“As a member of ‘Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty’ (NPT), Iran should fulfill the relevant international obligations,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said at a press briefing.
Hong made the remarks while addressing a forthcoming International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) report on the Iranian nuclear issue following news reports saying that many of Iran’s nuclear plans for its military would be disclosed by the IAEA’s report.
Hong said China stands for resolving Iran’s nuclear issue by dialogue and co-operation.
The IAEA should positively clarify relevant problems by co-operating with Iran in an impartial and objective manner, Hong said, adding that Iran should be flexible and sincere when co-operating with the IAEA.
Hong said China firmly opposes using force and threats of force when coping with international affairs.
It is extremely important to avoid new turmoil in the Middle East, Hong said, and a peaceful settlement is the common benefit for both the Middle East and international society.
China will be highly-responsible concerning the international nuclear non-proliferation regime and the Middle East’s peace and stability, while maintaining communications with relevant parties and the IAEA, Hong said. China will unswervingly push dialogue and co-operation and play a constructive role in the diplomatic efforts to peacefully solve the issue, Hong said.
The spokesman called on relevant parties and international society to make joint efforts on the issue.
Meanwhile, the United States yesterday said Iran is its the biggest threat in the Middle East, surpassing al Qaeda, which is down but not out, a senior US military official said yesterday.
“The biggest threat to the United States and to our interests and to our friends, I might add, has come into focus and it’s Iran,” said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity. – Xinhua/Reuters.
