Chindungwe wants to stay at Bosso

Sports Reporter
A SWORN hatred of constantly changing clubs has led to Highlanders FC captain Felix Chindungwe extending his stay with the Easycall champions. Chindungwe says while the club’s officials were yet to engage him on contract extension talks, he feels making a move at this particular juncture might jeorpadise his career. The central defender moved fromcity rivals Chicken Inn at the beginning of the 2014 season following a sterling season the previous year.

Chindungwe is among several senior players at the club whose contracts expire on Thursday but was yet to receive communication from the club. Other players who are facing an exit from Bosso include Erick Mudzingwa, Ariel Sibanda, Mthulisi Maphosa, Webster Chingodza, Njabulo Nyoni, and the Bantu Rovers trio of Obidiah Tarumbwa, Nqobizitha Masuku and Teenage Hadebe whose one-year loan deals come to an end.

The 33-year-old Chindungwe said he was hopeful of being offered a new contract at the club as Highlanders officials had informed them (players) they would be engaged at the beginning of next month.

“I do not think it will be in my interests to change clubs at this point in time. I need stability and believe we can build on the performances of this past season to achieve more at Bosso. Going to a new club will be more like starting afresh but I think continuity will be the best bet,” said Chindungwe.

Chindungwe said he does not regret leaving Chicken Inn for Highlanders despite the fact the Gamecocks went on to lift the Championship that has eluded Bosso since 2006. The former Shooting Stars player said he was happy for his former team adding it was a joy to see his teammates lift the championship.

“I am happy for the guys, I know they worked hard for it but I don’t regret making that move because I could have stayed and the team (Chicken Inn) wouldn’t have won it but there are my close friends in the squad that I am truly happy for following the achievement,” he said.

While it is uncertain which players Bosso would want to retain next year with a new coach expected to take over, Chindungwe is likely to feature in next year’s squad as he performed well and could prove vital in marshalling the defence as the team searches for the league title that has eluded them for the past nine years.

The club would be turning 90 years next year and would want to ensure they win trophies to spice up the celebrations.
Fans have previously questioned the executive’s stance of failing to renew player contracts before they expire, while waiting to negotiate later.
