The Chinese Embassy in Zimbabwe and private firm Jiangsu Fanye Power yesterday handed over a US$12 000 solar system and essential goods worth thousands of dollars to Jairos Jiri Children’s Centre in Harare, in a significant move to bolster education for children with disabilities.
Coming at the start of the 2026 academic year, the donation is set to provide a permanent solution to energy challenges at the centre.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, Chinese Ambassador to Zimbabwe Zhou Ding commended the Jairos Jiri Association for its 60-year legacy of empowering the vulnerable.
He said the gesture was a testament to the “enduring friendship and deepening partnership” between Harare and Beijing.
“China is proud to have contributed to Zimbabwe’s development — through infrastructure such as hospitals, schools, airports, and power stations. Today, we gather not only to deliver donations but to celebrate a partnership that touches the lives of millions,” he said.
Drawing parallels between the two nations, the Ambassador noted that China’s own journey from poverty to global economic leadership serves as a blueprint for Zimbabwe’s potential.
“China too once faced profound poverty, yet through unity and determination, it achieved transformative growth. We are confident that Zimbabwe can and will realise the same promise,” he said.
In addition to the solar infrastructure, the donations included computers, school books and food supplies.
Ambassador Zhou emphasised that Chinese enterprises are increasingly prioritising Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), citing ongoing projects across the country such as borehole drilling, clinic construction and the rehabilitation of irrigation systems.
The solar system was installed by Jiangsu Fanye Power Energy Equipment Company.
Head of the company, Ms Amy Meng, said the initiative was driven by the global vision of “a community with a shared future for mankind.”
“To us, these devices are industrial products; but for the children, they mean brighter classrooms, more time for learning, and an accessible future. Fulfilling social responsibility, or CSR, is the cornerstone of a company’s long-term development. We are willing to join hands with Zimbabwe to share the dividends of solar energy and green technologies,” she said.
Jairos Jiri Association executive director, Dr Alva Senderayi, said the centre provides essential care and education to 168 children, upholding the legacy of its late founder.
