A Chinese man appeared in court over the weekend after he was arrested by police acting on a tip-off that he was dealing in dangerous drugs.

Zheng Chunping was not asked to plead when he appeared before Harare magistrate Ruth Moyo, on charges of unlawful possession of dangerous drugs.

Prosecutors alleged that on July 11 at around 6:30 am, detectives from CID Drugs and Narcotics, Harare received information to the effect that Chunping was dealing in dangerous drugs, specifically methylenedioxymethamphetamine (crystal meth) at his home.

Acting on the tip-off, detectives proceeded to Chunping’s home at Peackwood Village, along Cecil Road in Harare.

They waited for him at the communal entrance to the gated community and intercepted Chunping upon his arrival in a black BMW X6.

The police introduced themselves to him and advised him of the purpose of their visit. A search was conducted on him and the police allegedly recovered one sachet of the dangerous drug from his pocket.

Another sachet was recovered from inside of the door panel on the driver’s side. Further searches were done in his house but did not yield anything.

Chunping was subsequently arrested and escorted to CID Drugs and Narcotics where the drugs were tested and confirmed to be crystal meth.

Soon after his release, Chunping was arrested by immigration officials who intended to verify his immigration status in Zimbabwe.
