Chinhoyi scraps debts

Chinhoyi Bureau
CHINHOYI residents have hailed Local Government, Urban and Rural Development Minister Cde Ignatius Chombo for directing councils to write off their debt following compliance by the municipality recently. Minister Chombo directed all the 92 rural and urban councils to write off the debts residents owed since 2009 saying it was an albatross on the necks of people. The residents owed council various amounts which accumulated as people tried to adjust to the multi-currency system while councils continued sending high bills. Some of them had their water or electricity supplies disconnected.

Makonde district administrator and acting chairperson of Chinhoyi council Mr Joseph Manyurapasi confirmed the development adding that the process of rationalising the amounts owed was still under way. “Chinhoyi municipality has complied with the Government directive and has written off what residents owed. We are, however, still trying to work out how much that will add up to and the modalities of clearing them,” he said.
