City waste disposal

INCOMING Harare councillors have been urged to give priority to waste management to prevent the outbreak of water borne diseases.
In recent years, improper waste disposal contributed to the upsurge of diseases such as cholera, typhoid and diarrhoea and increased pollution within the city. The new councillors were elected at last Wednesday’s harmonised elections.
Harare Residents Alliance co-ordinator Mr Keith Charumbira said the outgoing council had failed to provide essential services to the ratepayers. “Those tasked with improving the situation failed to. As residents’ representatives we hope the situation will improve and waste management made a huge priority in next year’s budget,” he said.

Mr Charumbira encouraged residents to be responsive to awareness campaigns on environmental management by heeding calls to recycle and carefully dispose of waste which cannot be recycled.
“Everyone should play an active role in improving the situation and this is long overdue,” he said.
