MARATHON runner Jonathan Chinyoka is looking at improving his time when he takes part in the CBZ Marathon tomorrow.
The marathon is one of the leading road races in the country and attracts some of the top local athletes.
And Chinyoka will be on the starting line at Old Georgians Sports Club for the race organised by Harare Athletic Club.
Besides the main event, which is the marathon, there is also the half marathon, 21km wheelchair race, 10km and 5km races on offer.
For Chinyoka, tomorrow’s marathon will be his second for this year, after competing at the Old Mutual Harare Marathon a few weeks ago, where he posted a time of 2 hours 20 minutes 44 seconds.
“There is a new crop of athletes doing well. But my target is to beat my time from Old Mutual, of which Old Mutual is a flat course, and now I am going for a tough race.
“The course for CBZ is hilly, but I am aiming for better results,” said Chinyoka.
He has previously won the race, claiming the title in 2020.
“I have done everything I can to prepare for the CBZ Marathon. Now all I can do is wait for the day and give it my all.
“Old Mutual was part of my preparations for the CBZ Marathon, which is my main target. I just wanted to qualify for Two Oceans, and I actually managed to get a podium finish.
“I am trying to push for good results so that maybe I may attract some sponsors for the Two Oceans,” said Chinyoka.
This year, the men’s open will have a new champion as the defending champion, Tendai Zimuto, is taking a rest following his participation at the Zurich Marathon last week.
Zimuto placed 32 in 2 hours 11 minutes 05seconds and coach Benson Chauke, who has been working with him, confirmed he will not be part of tomorrow’s race.
“He is just coming from another race. So, he is not going to be defending.
“But we would wish the others that have fresh legs to give it their go, if possible, eclipse his time from the past two editions,” said Chauke.
CBZH group chief marketing officer Matilda Nyathi said they were optimistic of an exciting competition.
“Since the marathon route is certified by World Athletics and is also a Comrades and Two Oceans qualifier it will definitely attract the best talents in the country.
“The CBZ Marathon has managed to maintain its status as one of the well sought after runs, likewise as in previous races we expect tight and stiff competition from the athletes as they seek to claim the honours,” said Nyathi. Winners for both men and women’s categories the marathon will get US$1 000.
