It was all cool last week as CHIPAWO celebrated 25 years in existence at the Zimbabwe College of Music. The event saw some of the organisation founder members including present members clad in black evening attire supporting their colour code.

The youngest aged six years old Fafi who made headlines at the recent Europe tour also caused a stir at the celebrations with her energetic moves and melodious voice.

Not to be left out was the popular song, ‘Gomo Guru’, which was CHIPAWO’s song for past years, was also performed with the crowd joining in the performance.

The colourful event saw Zimpapers receiving an award of recognition before the cake cutting ceremony.

In an interview with one of CHIPAWO members Wellington Billiat said the celebrations go a long way in developing his music and dance.

“We are so happy that we are celebrating silver jubilee. I am so happy that I have shook hands and shared tips with former members. It is a great opportunity for us too. I joined CHIPAWO a long time ago and have been doing music and dance. I have learnt a lot and was groomed to be a better person,” he said.

He said that those who dance are considered insane by those who cannot hear the music.

“I believe that we learn by practice. Many people think music and dance is for the uneducated but if taken seriously it will make you a better person. There are a lot of CHIPAWO products such as the late Chiwoniso Maraire, Dananai Gurira who is in Hollywood and even David Chipfunyise who are continuing to make it big in the arts sector,” he said.

However, whether it means to learn to dance by practicing dancing or to learn to live by practicing living, the principles are the same.

According to CHIPAWO official, in each music and dance, it is the performance of a dedicated precise set of acts, physical or intellectual, from which comes shape of achievement, a sense of one’s being, a satisfaction of spirit.
