NEW Year’s Gift scored two beautiful goals to win a league match over fellow Tanganda Tea Company side, FC Tingamira on Sunday afternoon in a Chipinge/Chimanimani Division Three League match.
Derbies are normally unpredictable and this one was no exception with New Year’s Gift and Tingamira players taking turns to miss clear-cut scoring chances.
Despite the desperate defending of Tingamira defenders, 20 minutes into the match, New Year’s Gift striker, Yassaint shielded the ball well and sprinted towards the penalty area, drawing the goalkeeper off his line before curling the ball beyond the reach of the bemused Tingamira goalkeeper to propel New Year’s Gift into the lead.
In the second half, Tingamira came back a rejuvenated side as it looked for the equaliser.
Whatever they said to the players at half time seemed to have galvanised them into a combative mood as their efforts were duly rewarded in the 48th minute when Morris Muchemedzi tapped in a cross from the left after some good footwork by a overlapping defender.
Both teams appeared to be contended with sharing the spoils, but the flawless football degenerated into a kick and run affair.
Maxwell Zabula, the New Year’s Gift left-back robbed the ball from a Tingamira right winger and laid a square pass to Ngandu Mangala, his twin-centre striker, who had neat exchanges of passes with fellow striker, Yassaint. The latter went forward for the kill leaving Tingamira’s goalkeeper a well beaten man.
New Year’s Gift was 2-1 to the good.
Tingamira bombarded the New Year’s Gift’s goal area in search of the equaliser, but the defence hung on for dear life until the end of the encounter.
