A TOTAL of 58 000 farmers in Chipinge have received training in the climate smart agriculture concept, popularly known as Pfumvudza, ahead of the onset of the 2012-22 farming season.

The ongoing trainings of farmers have since surpassed the target, with more farmers expected to come forth and benefit.

Last year the district managed to train 38 000 farmers in Pfumvudza.

Speaking at the Chipinge District Civil Protection Unit workshop held at Manesa Training Centre recently, district agronomist officer, Mr Benson Musinake, said they were scaling up food and nutrition security programmes in line with the National Development Strategy (NDS) 1.

“The district has managed to surpass its target of training farmers on Pfumvudza. A total of 58 000 farmers have so far been trained against last year’s 38 000. The programme has also been extended to urban farmers with small pieces of land and they will benefit from receiving inputs,” he said.

Mr Musinake said the Government also handed over motorcycles to agricultural extension workers to improve efficiency in their operations.

“For Pfumvudza purposes, we have received the first batch of 55 motorcycles and are expecting to get another 59. Our staff also received 115 cellphones recharged with airtime, and this is helping us in easy and timeous sharing and dissemination of information,” said Mr Musinake.

He said there were other development partners complementing Government’s efforts on Pfumvudza in various wards.
