It’s all systems go for the launch of this year’s Culture Month today at the Rusungukuko Clinic open space in Chiredzi under Chief Tshovani.

This grand cultural occasion is expected to attract 20 000 participants  from all walks of life, awakening Chiredzi from its deep slumber with a series of festivities.

President Mnangagwa will officially launch the event, which runs under the theme “Celebrating Indigenous Voices”.

This year’s theme aims to recognise, honour and promote the linguistic diversity and cultural heritage of indigenous communities, as well as to encourage self-expression through various forms of art.

The Ministry of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, in conjunction with the National Arts Council of Zimbabwe, is behind today’s mammoth launch.

After months of preparation, fireworks are guaranteed in Chiredzi, where formal proceedings will start at 9am and continue until 3pm.

After the main official launch and address by the President, attention will shift to the musical gala, featuring an array of seasoned and upcoming musicians.

Household names, led by Mark Ngwazi, Freeman and Sandra Ndebele, are set to headline the event.

Bulawayo-based cultural ensemble Khaya Arts and Elysium Magama will provide variety at this event. Joseph Chauke, backed by Amarula Band, Chebvute Jukwa Dance Group, Timothy Gokova and Mabhanan’ana Express, DJ Mnisi & Sisters, Blessed Music Generation, Tecla Mamoyo, Elizabeth Bernard and Masvingo Teachers College will also perform.

Judging by the line-up, those in attendance will  not only be guaranteed fun but also an opportunity to learn about other cultures.

In an interview with Zimpapers Arts and Entertainment Hub, the NACZ communications and public relations manager, Agga Nyabinde, stressed that it was all systems go.

“We are more than ready for the event, and everything is now in place for the big day.

“All our exhibitors have mounted their stalls, with the team from the Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution for Masvingo Province, led by Honourable Ezra Chadzamira, set to welcome guests. It’s also a big occasion for the people of Chiredzi, who have been given the privilege of hosting this year’s edition,” he said.

“It’s a free event for creatives in fashion, music, spoken word, dance and culinary arts. These activities are being held in line with our tradition as we seek to promote our culture.”

According to the programme, the President will be taken on a tour of legacy projects meant to celebrate Zimbabwean culture upon his arrival in Chiredzi.

Minister Chadzamira will play a key role in leading the programme.

Afterwards, the Minister of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture Lieutenant General (Retired) Anselem Sanyatwe, is expected to make his remarks and introduce the guest of honour, President Mnangagwa.

The President will then officially launch this year’s Culture Month, which is set to make an impression.

This launch is expected to usher in a new era as culture is set to be used to promote Ubuntu, love and unity. Creatives in various arts disciplines — such as poetry, spoken word, literary arts, music, painting and other forms — have been given yet another chance to showcase their talents.

According to arts and culture enthusiasts, this month rightfully belongs to creatives who have been yearning for empowerment and recognition.

Motivated by the Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development, proclaimed by UNESCO as May 21, Culture Month has been endorsed by the Ministry of Sport, Recreation, Arts, and Culture, through their implementing partner, the National Arts Council of Zimbabwe, to host a month-long celebration.

After the launch, attention will shift to the “Indigenous Languages and Cultural Dialogue Week”, which will take place in the fourth week of the event.

Following the national launch, Culture Month celebrations will also be held in all the country’s 10 provinces, with the provincial launches officiated by Ministers of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution.

Chiredzi will certainly be in the spotlight for good reasons as the district, known for its rich cultural heritage, has been given a chance to host the grand event.

The Culture Month launch does not only highlight the rich artistic heritage of Zimbabwe but also serves as a platform for fostering collaboration and creativity within the community. By actively participating in this celebration, the community can ensure that its cultural contributions receive the recognition they deserve.
