The tournament, sponsored by National Foods, is open to teams in the Epworth Area Zone League. Playing before a very appreciative crowd of nearly 3 000, Batanai set the tone for the game when they took an early lead through Fidelis Mandere who capitalised on a defensive blunder and slotted the ball home in the 28th minute.
Chiremba threw everything into attack but found Batanai’s defence unyielding but finally found the equaliser in the 65th minute when Trust Daniel beat a poorly conceived off-side trap and scored a wonderful goal.
Two minutes later he scored another beauty to give Chiremba a deserved lead. Taurai Sigauke, in goals for Chiremba, was outstanding and pulled off a couple of spectacular saves as Batanai searched for the elusive equaliser.
However, in the 81st minute Wise Kapwezha put the game beyond doubt when he scored the third goal for Chiremba, sending the crowd into a frenzy. Presenting the trophy and prize money to Chiremba, Natfoods director, Chipo Nheta, commended both teams for playing an attractive soccer.
He said it was part of Natfoods’ Corporate Social Investment to promote the development of soccer in disadvantaged communities. He urged the youth to shun anti-social behaviour and do constructive things like taking part in sporting activities.
“We hope the next Peter Ndlovu or Didier Drogba will come from Epworth,” he said. The Red Seal tournament, which carries a glittering trophy and prize money, is slated to become an annual event.
