Joy for Madziwa

Day in style when they received sports kits from the Zimbabwe Handball Federation.
Amon Madzvamuse, the ZHF president who hails from Bondamakara Village at Madziwa, donated netball, soccer and handball uniforms as well as balls for the respective disciplines at a colourful presentation held near Mutumba High School yesterday morning.
Mutumba High School is situated some 40km outside Bindura.
Local from the area surrounding Mutumba High School, were also not left out as their women’s netball and men’s soccer teams received uniforms and balls from the ZHF president.
Six netball, soccer and handball kits, worth a total of US$2 500, were handed out to Mutumba High School, Chiimbira Primary School and to the local villagers by Madzvamuse yesterday.
Speaking at the ceremony, Madzvamuse said he decided to give back to the community that he grew up with in Madziwa by giving them the sports kits.
“In fact, I wanted them to celebrate Africa Day in style by getting this donation from the ZHF and I hope it (the donation) will go a long way in developing sport in this area.”
But Madvamuse said the main thing that drove him to come up with the idea of donating the sports kits was that he would like to spread the sport of handball to the Madziwa area in Mashonaland Central.
“The funny thing is that I hail from this area and in the past there was no handball that was being played here, and I used to hear people from Madziwa asking why the sport was not being played in their area when the president of the ZHF comes from their own area.
“I didn’t feel comfortable with these remarks and that’s when I decided to bring handball to Madziwa by first donating a playing kit to Mutumba High School.
“We’ve also conducted some handball coaching clinics in this area and I’m glad the sport is growing with each passing day in Madziwa,” Madzvamuse said.
The ZHF boss also said he would like to see the Mashonaland Central Province continuing its dominance in handball at the annual National Youth Games.
Madziwa-based commercial farmer Ngonidzashe Kanengoni gave Madzvamuse a pat on the back for his generous gesture.
“Madziwa has, all along, been neglected when it comes to the development of sport in Zimbabwe but we can now stand up and boast that we are now among ‘the sporting powerhouses’ of Zimbabwe, thanks to Madzvamuse.
“He has done quite a tremendous job of taking sport to the people of this area who had no social activities to talk about in the past.
“The people of Madziwa cannot only play popular sports like netball and soccer but they can now take themselves to the handball pitch and play the sport there and it’s all because of the sterling effort that is being done by Madzvamuse of developing sport in general in this area,” Kanengoni said.
