Chirewa completes Huddersfield Town loan switch from Wolves

Zimbabwe international Tawanda Chirewa has joined English League One side Huddersfield Town on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers for the remainder of the 2024/25 season.

The 21-year-old attacking player spent the first half of the season on loan with Derby County but his spell was disrupted by injuries.

He becomes Huddersfield’s fourth signing of the January window.

Chirewa has made eight Premier League appearances for Wolves since joining from Ipswich as a teenager in 2023.

Town head coach Michael Duff said in a club statement: “Getting in quality additions this late into the transfer window is difficult, so we’re really happy to have Tawanda join our group for the remainder of the season.

“With a big potential, our job is to help him show the talent we know he has. An exciting forward player, his versatility is an asset, increasing our options and points of attack.

“We have a lot of important games to come in a short space of time, so I’m looking forward to working with Tawanda and seeing him contribute in the run in ahead.”

Sporting director Mark Cartwright commented: “Tawanda has a unique skillset compared to our existing attacking options, and his flexibility to play anywhere in the final third with comfort was a real appeal to us.

“A young, hungry, attack minded player, we’re excited to have Tawanda join the group for the remainder of the season and provide Michael with another good quality option.

“We’re really pleased with how both Nigel and Joe have handled themselves having joined from the same club, and with a lot of meaningful football left to play, Tawanda has a great chance to have a real say on how our season progresses alongside his new teammates.”

Chirewa said: “I’m delighted to be here and feel blessed to have been given the opportunity to join such a big club ahead of a really important part of the season.

“I’ve heard amazing things from Nigel and Joe about what it’s like to play here, the facilities, coaches and the supporters, and can’t wait to experience all of that for myself.

“There were a few different options available to me, but coming to Huddersfield Town always felt like the right decision. Speaking to the Sporting Director Mark and Head Coach Michael only made me more certain, and now I’m just looking forward to getting started as quickly as possible.”

Capable of playing a number of attacking roles but perhaps a most natural fit on the wing or at number 10, Chirewa should give Michael Duff an additional tactical option that hasn’t especially been available this season. (zimsportlive.co.zw)
