FARAI Chitengwa shot a two-under-par 70 to grab a one-shot lead after the opening round of the Open Classic at Chapman Golf Club yesterday.
Chitengwa, who has returned home after time as a golf teacher in Tanzania in the past few years, took control of the first day.“I was really relaxed, just kind of letting it happen instead of forcing it, which every so often that’s what we golfers do,” he said.
“I am looking forward to another good round, it was long since I was in such a position and so I feel good. I will just focus on my game. The course is playing well and I practised a lot for the tournament and so I hope results will come my way.”
Robson Saurombe was in second place after posting a one-under-par 71.
The Chapman professional will return to the field hoping for an improved outing today as he plays with the leader.
Lyford Yadyo was on level par together with Bernard Magaso, Ryan Lang and Ignatius Mketekete.
The Open Classic will end today.
In the Eisenhower Race, the amateurs had their first round of the final qualifying event — the prestigious Zimbabwe Amateur Championships.
The 72-hole event is being held in the Lowveld using the Hippo Valley and Triangle Golf Clubs.
