THIS year’s three-hour HP lubes/Castrol Endurance Race Day, which for the second year running will be held at Bulawayo Motorsport Park on December 4, will see two young brothers — Trey and Austin Chitepo — following the footsteps of their father.

Trey and Austin are the sons of former motor rally driver and navigator, George Chitepo.

And the two young drivers will be among a host of local motor racing competitors who will be battling for top honours at this enduro event.

An enduro race is a type of car racing that takes place mostly on tracks.

Enduro takes its name from “Endurance racing’’ since it consists of hundreds of laps around the oval.

This year’s Endurance Race Day will once again consist of sprint races, bikes and the main race for vehicles, which will see the Chitepo brothers going for gold.

They have promised to give their father, George, who will soon be turning 50, a perfect birthday present, by emerging victorious at this event.

Interestingly, Trey will be turning 21 on November 27, and the December 4 event will come exactly one week after he celebrates his birthday.

A place on the podium will put some icing on the young driver’s cake.

Trey and his 24-year-old brother Austin will be sharing a Toyota Corolla RX1 1600, which has already been modified, by their father.

Speaking to The Herald yesterday, George Chitepo, said his two sons were excited to be part of this year’s Endurance Race Day.

“Trey has just started out as a motor racing driver while Austin has been in the trenches for a number of years now and it will be interesting to see how they will perform together at this year’s Endurance Race Day.

“I’ve already fine-tuned the car that they will be sharing at this event and I’m quite sure they will do well.

“They will be competing against some of this country’s top motor racing drivers.

“They are determined to leave a mark there,’’ said George, who is one of the few black drivers who were involved in the elite sport of motor rallying in this country, until it was scratched from the local motor racing calendar at the end of 2012.

A number of the country’s top motor racing drivers and bikers are just itching to get back on the track on December 4.

Their season was disrupted by the Covid-19 lockdown restrictions.

This year’s Endurance Race Day, whose main race will be staged from 3pm to 6pm, will be staged by Motorsport Zimbabwe, in conjunction with Bulawayo Motoring Club. The event’s main sponsors are hp lubes/Castrol, Ezytrack and Guard Alert.

Bulawayo Motoring Club have indicated they will follow all the Covid-19 protocols.
