THE Chitungwiza Junior Council has joined children across the continent in commemorating the Day of the African Child, while announcing plans to hold belated celebrations later this month alongside the inauguration of its 27th council.
In a statement, the Junior Council paid tribute to the students of Soweto who, on June 16, 1976, protested against injustice and fought for their right to quality education.
“Their sacrifice remains a powerful reminder that every child deserves access to education, protection, participation and equal opportunities,” the statement said.
The council said the commemoration serves as a reminder of the need to continue promoting and protecting children’s rights across Africa.
It reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for children’s rights, amplifying young voices and creating safe spaces where children can learn, grow and thrive.
“Let us continue to build an Africa where every child is heard, valued and empowered to reach their full potential,” the statement said.
Meanwhile, Chitungwiza Municipality spokesperson Mr Tafadzwa Kachiko said the municipality and the Junior Council will hold belated Day of the African Child commemorations on June 26.
The event will coincide with the inauguration of the 27th Chitungwiza Junior Council and will be held at Chitungwiza Municipality’s head office.
“The ceremony will take place at Chitungwiza Municipality head office and we are planning to have a very historic event,” said Mr Kachiko.
He said preparations were underway, with the municipality engaging various stakeholders to support the commemorations and ensure the success of the event.
The Day of the African Child is commemorated annually on June 16 in honour of the Soweto Uprising of 1976 and highlights the rights, welfare and development of children across the continent.
