A Chitungwiza man who severely assaulted his wife during a church service at a shrine accusing her of spending six days without coming home was jailed for 11 months.
Precious Mudariki (32) of 13 055 in Unit N, Chitungwiza, was on September 20 attending a church gathering at a shrine near Jambanja flea market in Unit M.
Mudariki had been at the shrine for six days without returning home and on the fateful day, at around 9am, her husband Zhurio Arimando (38) followed her.
The court heard that Arimando proceeded to the shrine and signalled Mudariki to come where he was waiting.
Arimando ordered Mudariki to get her bag so that they could go back home.
Mudariki agreed and proceeded to collect her bag with Arimondo following behind.
The court heard that Arimando, who was seething with anger, grabbed Mudariki on the shoulder and pushed her towards a nearby cabin.
He pinned Mudariki’s legs and she fell to the ground.
Arimando the assaulted the defenceless Mudariki. He allegedly picked up a half brick and hit her with it.
Mudariki’s screams of agony drew the attention of a passing police officer who came to her rescue, leading to Arimando’s arrest.
Appearing before Chitungwiza magistrate Mr Lazarus Murendo, Arimando pleaded guilty to domestic violence.
He was handed a 12-month jail term with a month set aside for five years.
Ms Zuvarashe Mushayabasa prosecuted.
In a separate case, an abusive man allegedly turned his aunt into a punching bag each time she tried to stop him from bashing his wife, a Harare Civil Court heard yesterday.
Lizzy Force claimed Padia Gebe bashes his wife each time he comes home drunk and is also beaten when she intervened.
Force was seeking a protection order against Gebe whom she said was also in the habit of verbally abusing her with obscene words.
“I have endured a lot of suffering at the hands of this man,” she said. “He physically abuses his wife each time he comes home drunk and if I try to reprimand or refrain him he turns his anger on me.”
Force told the magistrate Ms Audrey Tarugarira that she was being embarrassed by Gebe who verbally abuses her with vulgar words in the presence of her husband.
“I once attempted to commit suicide only to be saved by a police officer because I am fed up of living such a horrible life,” she said.
She pleaded with Ms Tarugarira to grant her a protection order against Gebe’s violent behaviour.
Gebe denied the allegations levelled against him by his aunt saying she was the one who physically abused her during a misunderstanding with his wife.
“I had never done all that she has just told the court,” he said.
Ms Tarugarira granted the application in Force’s favour which barred Gebe from physically or verbally abusing her.
