Chitungwiza Municipality has begun engaging residents to come up with a supplementary budget to enable sustainability of the council’s operations.
The local authority had budgeted $28,3 million for 2019 and had also projected to collect $22,8 million from regularising 7 500 properties, bringing the total budget to $51,15 million.
The two-day budget consultative meetings, which were conducted in all the 25 wards by council officials, ended yesterday.
Residents did not contribute much to the supplementary budget preferring to focus on other grievances they have with the management concerning service delivery.
In an interview, Chitungwiza mayor Lovemore Maiko said it was crucial to engage residents on the new budget.
“Residents are very important to us and their contributions are essential so that we can come up with a budget that take resident’s views into account,” he said.
“There is need for a supplementary budget if council is to continue providing services to its stakeholders and be able to stay afloat.”
