Chivero disaster boat owner’s trial date set

members — Fadil Ramon Weale (27), Enoch Yolani Zulu (36) and Joseph Abrahams (36) — face 11 counts of culpable homicide for the Christmas Day tragedy
According to police reports, the ill-fated boat, named Chasura One, was only supposed to be taken for a test-drive but Zulu and Weale, allegedly acting on Ameer’s orders, picked up 15 passengers, many of them school kids, for a cruise on the lake around 6pm.
Once the boat, which had a capacity for seven passengers, got to the middle of the lake it started filling up with water.
Panicked passengers rushed to one side resulting in the vessel capsizing and sin-          king.
The driver and the captain swam to the shore where they took a second craft and managed to save four people.
Latif Ameer and his employees are out on bail but face possible life sentences if convicted. — New Ziana.
