THE potentially exciting and competitive inaugural edition of the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) Sports Gala which was scheduled for this weekend has been shelved due to the cholera outbreak.

The menacing water-borne disease hit different parts of the nation and Manicaland in particular where Buhera District has been the worst affected.

Accordingly, the first edition of the ZPCS Sports Gala, an event that would bring together a huge crowd at one venue —Mutare Farm Prison Junior School – had to be postponed to a date to be announced.

The ZPCS Sports Gala is an event that was mooted to give schools being run by the prison wardens an opportunity to compete and progressively interact among themselves.

ZPCS Manicaland provincial spokesperson, Liberty Mhlanga confirmed the shelving of the ZPCS Sports Gala.

“This year we had arranged to host the inaugural Commissioner’s Sports Gala and Merit Awards from Friday (today) to Sunday. Due to the cholera outbreak, the event was postponed until the water-borne disease subsides.

“The Commissioner General for ZPCS, Commission General Cyril Ngavaite Moses Chihobvu will grace the inaugural Commissioner’s Sports Gala and Merit Awards,” said Mhlanga.

Mhlanga explained the motive behind the Commissioner General’s Sports Gala.

“Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) as an organisation is responsible for 13 schools across the country, of which three of them are secondary schools.

“So this event is where the school teams will be competing for awards in netball and football. This is also an opportunity for schools under the auspices of ZPCS to share experiences and wisdom so that we move along as one organisation. As you are aware, sport cuts across boundaries and fosters the spirit of unity and teamwork.

“We can only prosper when working together as a team. ZPCS has a sound sports policy which is strictly adhered to. Last weekend, we were gathered at Mutare Farm Prison Grounds for the 2023 edition of the ZPCS Officer Commanding Manicaland’s Sports Tournament where all stations from all parts of the province participated.

“This shows that something is being done for the officers. Now, in the spirit of not leaving no-one behind, we are moving along with our schools under the same initiative,” he said.
