CHOLERA THREAT AT CHARGE OFFICE bus TERMINUS

THE Charge Office bus terminus next to Harare Central Police Station is facing a potential cholera outbreak due to raw sewage flowing outside the toilets.

Vendors at the terminus have expressed their concern as customers are reluctant to come to the area due to the dangerous health conditions.

Harare is currently battling a cholera outbreak and the raw sewage could exacerbate the situation.

The vendors urged the Harare City Council to address the issue immediately as there were many activities at the terminus.

One vendor, Miriam Chirisa, said the Council seemed reluctant to attend to the issue despite numerous complaints.

“What is happening at this bus terminus will result in the outbreak of cholera if not attended to immediately,” Chirisa said.

“Some of us work here daily as vendors but, as it stands, customers are not coming because of this sewage.

“No one wants to be subjected to such conditions.”

Chirisa said if a person used the toilet and flashed, the water with raw human waste flowed outside the toilet.

“This is the bus terminus that has buses which go to Chitungwiza and this is where the Central Police Station is, so a lot of activities happen here.

“I am afraid that there will be a cholera outbreak at this location soon,” she said.

“Some vendors have young children who actually play in that sewage, and the Council has not come to fix the issue since the toilet blockage five days ago.”

Innocent Ruwende, the Council spokesperson, said they would have cleared the blockage by yesterday.

“Our reaction time to a blockage is 24 hours after reporting.

“Currently, our sewers are not self-cleaning due to insufficient supplies of water,” he said.
