The Minister of Home Affairs Ignatius Chombo has instructed the police to descend heavily on errant kombi drivers as they are causing unnecessary road accidents, injuries and deaths. He said some kombi drivers have become a law unto themselves and were no longer respecting the sanctity of human life. Hesaid he was shocked that some kombi drivers do not even respect police officers on duty.
Minister Chombo said the government was displeased with the wanton nature with which motorists, especially public vehicle drivers have become insensitive to the sanctity of human life. “I’m warning kombi drivers to respect police officers, respect the law and respect human life. Certainly, this madness has to be halted forthwith.
“The full wrath of the law has to descend heavily on all errant drivers. I’ve asked all police officers to make sure that errant kombi drivers are dealt with accordingly.” He said the government has acquired additional motor bikes for police officers to improve the enforcement of traffic laws.
“These can manoeuvre in congested central business district areas, for example in Midlands province, we now have sanity prevailing because of the deployment of bikes. “We’ll increase the number in Harare where we recently deployed some in the CBD area in an effort to deal with reckless drivers especially the kombi drivers who are creating havoc in our CBD areas,” he said.
Meanwhile, national police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Shadreck Chigagura said police had noted with concern the conduct of some motorists on the country’s roads. He urged everyone to observe road rules as police would descend on offenders.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police has noted with concern the wayward driving conduct exhibited by some motorists on the country’s roads which is contributing to road traffic accidents, leading to injuries, deaths and damage to property,” he said. “Innocent lives have been lost as a result of these careless and negligent drivers who don’t value human life.”
