Choosing the right career

Making the right decision for a career can be a difficult thing to do whether you are educated or not.
Examinations have started and very soon the results will be out. This will enable those with A-Levels even some O-Level candidates to apply for college placement which will determine their careers.
Most people find it really hard to choose the right career, which is why you see some people in colleges switch programmes and you wonder what the root problem could be.

They later realise it is not what they ought to do, maybe because it’s boring, or something else is far more appealing for spending the next 40 years, or the courses are unattractive, or the course requires some specific type of equipment which might be too expensive.
It would be advisable to first talk to career guidance experts before one applies for any programme in college or university.

Going to college is not as easy as taking a walk in the park. There might be some vital information that you never knew of which is very important to you before you choose exactly what it is that you want to do in life. Some parents are guidance counsellors already which would be an advantage if yours is one.

When selecting a college or university for the programme you want to study, you have to check for three main aspects. Check if they offer the programme(s) you ought to do, which is an obvious thing you must look at first.

The second is if the tuition fee is affordable to your parents or sponsor. Then search if it is a reputable institution and also check that their certificates are recognised nationally and or internationally, because you never know where you might want to search for a job after acquiring your degree.

Most graduates find it hard to get jobs because their diplomas or degrees are not recognised, so when applying it is best to do a major research on that matter.

Select a programme which contains the subjects of your greatest interest and also those you know you are pretty good at. You might have an interest in some subjects but realise that you are not good at those and worse enough don’t understand them.

One school guidance counsellor once stated that “don’t apply for a certain programme just because your friend is also doing it or just because someone in your family has done it before’’. Go for the things you know or think you are good at.

There are so many programmes one can select to study but the problem is that getting a job after acquiring some of these diplomas or degrees could be very difficult.

It could be tough simply because that type of profession might not be in demand that much as compared to some professions here in Zimbabwe.

This is college you will be attending, so the subjects you are going to study are more specialised unlike in high school where you had to deal probably with all different kinds of subjects.

In life we don’t always get what we want due to circumstances beyond our control. But at times if we really believe we can get something and work hard to be what we want to be, we can get it.

You can be whoever you want to be in life as long as you put motion and work hard to procure it. But first of all in whatever you do make sure you seek God’s guidance.

Your career is waiting for you out there but it will never come to you. You have to figure it out, research and find out what you are really good at. Good things come to those who wait but greater things appear to those who move and make it happen.
