RUSAPE-BASED poet and social commentator, Fabian Choto, has done it again by unleashing his sixth project, “Chingoma Chokwedu,” a thought provoking anthology he put together with 20 other Shona poets.
Choto has been consistent since 2017 when he launched his first project, “Wajaira”.
In 2020, he unleashed the well-received English anthology, “Wisdom and Foolishness,” which was followed by “Essential Verses” in 2022.
He went on to co-publish “Shamhu Inemunyu” and “Dzinobva Muropa” with other Shona poets.
The anthology consists of seasoned and upcoming poets and was edited by National Arts and Merit Award winner, Aleck Kaposa.
“Chingoma Chokwedu” also gave platform for a Form One learner, Tinerufaro Zharare, to launch his career and have his first project published alongside other established poets from across the country.
The modern Shona writers managed to effectively tackle several and vital societal issues using exceptional tone and diction.
Choto, an Assistant Inspector in the Zimbabwe Republic Police where he serves as a Chaplin, believes poetry is key in preserving the country’s culture, language, norms and values.
“We are glad to be back with another project, ‘Chingoma Chokwedu,’ a product of 20 seasoned and upcoming poets. It was not easy to connect 20 like-minded individuals from across the country to come up with this brilliant effort.
“The diverse nature of the poets has enabled the anthology to address a number of issues in different and diverse Shona dialects.
“Shona poetry must never be looked down upon because it is essential in promoting and promoting our indigenous language for the benefit of generations to come,” said Choto.
Choto said he was inspired to take poetry seriously by legendary Shona poets such as Vimbai Chivaura and Mordecai Hamutyinei.
