CHROME Stars returned to winning ways after edging struggling Vumbachikwe 1-0 in a Zifa Central Soccer League encounter played in Kwekwe on Sunday.
A Warren Mupawo strike in the 28th minute was all the chrome miners needed to collect maximum points to move within reach of table toppers Whawha.
Whawha drew one all with Gaths Mine to retain top spot with 11 points.
Chrome Stars are now tied on points with the correctional services side but lie second because of an inferior goal difference.
Yolam Ngwira, the Chrome Stars coach who had seen his side drawing in two previous games said the win is a morale booster to the side.
“I give credit to the boys for the win especially considering that we had two consecutive draws. This is a big morale booster for us going forward but at the moment it is too early to talk about the championship. We are just concentrating on winning our matches,” he said.
His counterpart, former Black Rhinos midfield maestro, Max Ruza conceded that his side has had the worst of starts since they joined the league.
He said his side was still looking for a winning formula.
Despite retaining the bulk of the team which includes former Masvingo United and Sporting Lions defender Charles Maguraushe, left back Ali Nyamombe and roping in the services of Ndabezinhle Ndlovu, the gold miners are winless in five matches they have played so far.
In other matches Blanket Mine shocked Gweru City 2-0 in Gwanda in a match the Gweru side dominated for the better part of the match.
“Chiwororo” as Gweru City is affectionately known could have buried the match in the first half but were denied three times by the woodwork.
The hosts utilised chances that came their way to dismiss the ambitious Gweru side.
