Chronicle loses $12,000 to newspaper vendor

Victoria Falls Reporter
A VICTORIA Falls based Chronicle vendor has been arrested for defrauding the company of more than $12,000 he failed to remit from newspaper sales in the resort town. Baron Nyoni, 26, of Chinotimba Township, appeared before resident magistrate Sharon Rosemani yesterday facing 21 counts of fraud.

Nyoni pleaded not guilty under the instruction of his legal counsel Givemore Muvhiringi of Dube and Partners.
He was remanded out of custody on $300 bail to February 27 for trial.

Nyoni would reside at the above address, not interfere with State witnesses, report to police fortnightly and his movements restricted to Matabeleland North province as his bail conditions.

Prosecutor Takunda Ndovorwi said from September 23, last year to January 30, this year, Nyoni on 21 occasions sold newspapers and went to a local bank where he only banked $1,491 instead of $14,191 thereby prejudicing the Zimpapers Bulawayo branch of $12,700 in cash.

The branch financial manager, Forward Kufakunesu, discovered the offence after noticing that the stock and sales were not tallying hence a bank statement was compiled, which indicated the actual cash deposit by the accused and deposit slips he allegedly altered.
