Ndlovu was badly injured in a horrific car crash on 16 December a few kilometres outside the resort town of Victoria Falls in an accident that claimed the life of his elder brother Adam and 24-year-old female companion Nomqhele Tshili.
Tshili was laid to rest at her rural home in Esiphezini while Adam was laid to rest at Lady Stanley Cemetery in a moving funeral attended by people from all walks of life.
Peter was allowed to bid farewell to his brother and friend accompanied by a fully equipped medical team. He came to the funeral in a wheelchair.
“Peter is still in the ICU although he is out of danger. The main reason that he is still in there is probably the protection part of it by his doctors because at the moment no one really knows how he will face the world,” said his elder brother, legendary Madinda at his Fourth Avenue offices in the city yesterday.
Madinda said his younger brother was now trying to walk using crutches and will remain under round-the-clock observation by a team of medical doctors and psychologists.
“Doctors have told us that Peter’s recovery is amazing and he will soon be out of hospital although we do not know when exactly. He is under experts who are monitoring his emotional state as they prepare him to face the world so until they assure us that his emotional make-up is fine, the family will appreciate that he keeps out of the public eye,” said Madinda.
The former Highlanders winger and now Mochudi Centre Chiefs of Botswana head coach said they were preventing members of the public from visiting Peter to protect the former Highlanders, Coventry City, Sheffield United, Birmingham and Mamelodi Sundowns striker.
“Human beings react in different ways and somebody might think they are trying to share Peter’s grief not knowing that they would in fact be evoking very painful memories which might create another problem, so until we get an all clear from his handlers, we will keep the boy as safe as possible,” said Madinda.
The Ndlovu family hired a psychologist to break the tragic news of the death of Adam to Peter as he had not been told by his brothers who feared the worst and were not qualified enough to offer counselling services in the event Peter failed to take the news properly.
He had prior to that been constantly asking about his elder brother.
