THE Seventh Day Adventist Church in Chikombedzi, Chiredzi South, has initiated a community outreach programme aimed at enhancing knowledge in various areas such as legal matters, health, skills development, insights into family life, project theory, and donations to schools and the community.

The programme which commenced in January has garnered positive attendance from both church members and the local community.

Sessions are conducted separately, with men attending on the first Sunday of the month, women on the second Sunday, and youths on the third Sunday.

According to the local pastor, Perfect Mahumucha the sessions cover topics such as drug and substance abuse, conflict management, legal knowledge, and self-reliance for youths.

“Women are taught about breast and cervical cancer, conflict management, legal knowledge, baking, gender-based violence, and family life. Men receive lessons on prostate cancer, family life, legal knowledge, gender-based violence, abuse, and conflict management.

“Skilled personnel from the local community, university lecturers, lawyers, medical doctors, police, and pastors serve as facilitators for these lessons, all of which are provided free of charge. It’s the church’s way of giving back to the community,” said Pastor Mahumucha.

He further revealed that they were also giving theoretical lessons on cattle ranching, farming, and goat breeding, with future plans being the practical implementation and the addition of more projects.

“The church is also offering donations to neighbouring schools at the start of the year, including stationery, uniforms, school shoes, and sanitary pads for the less privileged. Through a department called DORCAS, the church donates clothes and shoes to the community as well,” said the pastor.

However, Pastor Mahumucha cited the outbreak of cholera, which hindered reaching a larger audience due to limitations on congregation size.
