A KUWADZANA Apostolic Church bishop for Watsomba District approached Mutare Civil Court last week seeking for a maintenance downward variation from $60 to $25 for a child he sired with a congregant. “Your Worship, I can hardly afford that money as maintenance since I have four other children and I do not earn a salary, but survive on gifts and money given to me as appreciation by congregants and some of the people I spiritually assist. I cannot claim that as salary since I do not constantly get it,” the bishop, Moses Masenga, told the court.
Refuting the claims, Senzeni Muguti claimed that her ex-husband’s family was living a luxurious life while her child was suffering and adding that he was also in maintenance arrears.
“He is lying. He gets paid as a bishop and looks after his family very well,” argued Muguti.
Asked on why she had provided false information concerning her ex-husband’s family, Muguti apologised to the court claiming that she was not aware that it was an offence. “You clearly knew that he has other four children, but you mislead the court stating that he has two children. Lying in court is an offence that can land you in prison, so in future never lie before the court,” Mutare magistrate, Mrs Yeukai Chigodora warned Muguti.
The maintenance was, however, varied downwards from $60 to $30 and Masenga was ordered to clear up his maintenance arrears.
