THE CID Southern Region Coordinator’s Sports Gala kicked off in Bulawayo yesterday with the detectives taking part in darts and pool. Pool was played at the Bulawayo Central Police Station while Archers played host to darts. The detectives, who come from Matabeleland North, Matabeleland South and hosts Bulawayo are competing in six different disciplines, according to the regional sports officer Lloyd Nyakuchena.
“The games got underway today (yesterday) with darts and pool at Archers and Central Police Station respectively,” said Nyakuchena.
He said today will see the detectives competing in football and volleyball in both men and women as well as netball, athletics and chess, all the events taking place at Milton High School.
After the games a regional team will be selected to compete at the CID Director’s Gala set for Chinhoyi in July.
At the Chinhoyi tournament, a final CID team to compete at the Commissioner General of Police Sports Gala which is set for Bulawayo in August will be selected.
On paper Matabeleland South province looks stronger than their opponents, with the District Criminal Investigations Officer Max Maqandi boldly declaring last week that they will be coming to Bulawayo to sweep everything on offer. They have all rounders like the talented Nontokozo Moyo who plays volleyball, tennis and football while Best Mhikuro and his pool teammates will want to prove a point or two. Another player to look forward to is Nokuthula Nare in the ladies’ darts.
