Cimas Health Group successfully held its annual Cimas iGo half-marathon in Harare on Sunday to bring attention to prostate cancer and men’s other health concerns.

The Bulawayo edition is set for the 24th of November.

November is set aside to raise awareness on men’s health, with special focus on prostate cancer.

The Harare event saw over 1500 participants taking part in the 21km, 10km and 5km races.

It was held under the theme “Men’s Health Champions Build Healthier Communities.”

Speaking on the sidelines of the half-marathon, Cimas Health Group’s chief executive officer, Mr Vuli Ndlovu said the marathon aligns with Movember initiatives, a global movement dedicated to men’s health awareness.

“We have done this event in recognition of Men’s Health Awareness Month. Cimas is proud to host the Cimas iGo half marathon to bring attention to prostate cancer and other men’s health concerns.

“This is part of our humanitarian work of ploughing back to communities. All proceeds from this event will be donated to the Cancer Association of Zimbabwe. This is our commitment to fight cancer,” he said.

Mr Ndlovu said most men have poor health-seeking behaviour and they end up presenting to health facilities late, resulting in high mortality rates.

“We have heard cases of some men who ended up taking away their lives after being diagnosed with cancer. It’s really sad. It is our duty as corporates to instil good health seeking behaviour through investing in men’s health,” he said.

The general manager of the Cancer Association of Zimbabwe, Mrs Junior Mavu applauded Cimas for supporting vulnerable members of the community who are affected by cancer.

“Our main thrust is to support people with cancer and their families. Today we are happy that Cimas has supported us financially through this initiative.

“We also encourage communities to commit to better lifestyles such as taking a balanced diet and engaging in sporting activities for them to remain fit and reduce cancer incidences. Prostate cancer is the number one killer disease for men, hence education and awareness is key,” she said.

Last year the marathon attracted over 1 400 participants and raised US$13,753 for cancer support.

Cimas Health Group’s chief marketing officer Mrs Tatenda Madzikanda said the Harare edition of the iGo half-marathon was a great success.

“We are happy that we have played our role in supporting men’s health issues, in particular prostate cancer and we trust that the message has gotten through. We are hoping to see more men going to get screened for cancer.

“We are hoping for a better and bigger event next year but we are inviting those in Bulawayo or those who can travel to the City of Kings to join us on Sunday at Bulawayo Athletics Club for the Cimas iGo half-marathon event.”
