Harare City Council is targeting to clear the 151 000 people on its housing waiting list by 2030, Town Clerk Engineer Hosiah Chisango has said. The figure could be understated since early this year, the national housing backlog was estimated at 1,3 million, with Harare accounting for more than half of that figure.
In a recent interview, Eng Chisango said the city was aiming at 2030 to clear its housing backlog.
“Our current housing list is 151 000, but we need to look at the list as there are many people who benefited from stands from our various housing schemes that were on offer, including from cooperatives,” he said.
“In line with Government’s policy that a certain number of houses have to be built within a specified period of time, we anticipate to have met certain targets by 2030.”
Eng Chisango said as part of their strategies to clear the housing backlog, they were targeting to construct high-rise flats.
Harare has been struggling to satisfy hunger for accommodation, with existing housing schemes faikling to meet demand. Housing cooperatives and land developers allocated land by the council have failed to improve housing delivery, prompting the council to discontinue them and start Housing Pay Schemes.
According to Real Estate Institute of Zimbabwe, clearing the national housing backlog is a herculean task.
