HARARE City Council has conceded it is facing huge challenges in refuse collection.
Trash has been piling up in most parts of the city as council’s service delivery has virtually collapsed.
Residents believe they deserve better service as they are paying rates.
The Environmental Management Agency (EMA) is set to buy refuse collection trucks and temporarily manage solid waste in Harare.
The Harare City Council has vowed to resist the move, saying only the local authority is mandated to collect refuse in the city.
Below are some of the residents’ comments:
You are being offered assistance to collect refuse in the city, which you failed to do. Council should keep on cleaning the streets, install rubbish bins on all streets, and Council police should arrest those found guilty of littering. — Lud Tanaka

Why bill residents for refuse collection if you are going to demand devolution funds for the same task? — Katatizo Basb

Mayor, what is your job? You do not have to tell us excuses about how you have failed the city. Hopefully, things will change and Harare will restore its Sunshine City status. — Makaita Chita

This is what we call ineptitude. Your trucks come to our neighbourhoods at random times and scurry off without collecting any refuse because no one had an idea they would come through. — Milton

If you are failing to do a simple task such as refuse collection, what more of completing Rufaro Stadium renovations? — Love Make

If you are saying it’s not an easy task to run the city, then you are not up for the game. Why then do you have to sabotage residents by failing to provide services they need? Why not resign and let those who are capable take over? Just resign and stop giving lame excuses? — Macios Admar
