City gets US$80 000 cleaning material…as Mereki is castigated

City of Harare.
The materials were handed over by Environment and Natural Resources Minister Francis Nhema.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, Minister Nhema urged Zimbabweans to ensure the provision of sufficient waste management receptacles within the public or private transport conveyance.
“For those operating public transport, I remind you to ensure provision of sufficient waste receptacles within the public transport conveyance to enable our efforts to be holistic.

“In addition, all transporters must ensure that no litter is thrown from the transport conveyance while in transit. It is disturbing to see someone driving a very posh and clean car but he or she throws away water bottle containers or care-light containers at robots or on the highway.

Minister Nhema castigated social public places such as Mereki, Ziko and KwaMother for being unhygienic since they disposed garbage everywhere.
He urged church members, school children, parents, youth, elders and the business community to unite to ensure that waste was well managed and discarded in properly designated places.

Minister Nhema commended Delta Corporation for coming up with such an initiative as uncollected waste and litter was turning into a health time bomb.
He said the cleaning kits would go a long way in ensuring that the city retained its glamour and becomes the Sunshine City once again.

Harare mayor Mr Muchadeyi Masunda, urged citizens to take initiatives in ensuring that the city was always clean.
“Cleaning up does not mean that you will be sweeping the street but your responsibility of making use of the bins will go a long way to resuscitate our Sunshine City status. Please wake up and join the movement,” he said.

Mr Masunda hailed Delta Corporation’s initiative in waste management as well as creating employment in turning waste into money spinning venture for many people.
Delta Corporation operations director, Mr Etherton Mpisaunga, said the donation was a clear testimony of the firm’s commitment to the City of Harare.

“The City of Harare has traditionally been a very clean city and this is the reputation it has throughout the world.
“Through this donation and in combination with the remarkable efforts being made by the various stakeholders, some of whom are present here today, we aim to return the city to its well known status of the Sunshine City.”
