THE City of Harare will this week host the Sunshine City Half Marathon which is meant to cast the spotlight on the battle against drug and substance abuse.
The marathon will run under the theme, “Stamping Out Drug and Substance Abuse.”
It will start and finish at Harare Gardens and it will feature 5km, 10km and 21km races.
City of Harare Education and Social Services director, Lizzy Muchena, said the Sunshine City Half Marathon is a legacy event and has become part of the City’s tradition.
“The aim is to promote participation in community affairs,” she said.
“The marathon promotes the participation and engagement of the City in community affairs such as advocating against drug and substance abuse.
“Drug and substance abuse is a serious problem worldwide, which needs a collective effort.”
She said the City of Harare was pushing for a sport-based economy through tourism, showcasing the beauty of the Sunshine City and its hospitality.
“The platform is for inclusion and it is for everyone no matter the age. It also provides a chance for people living with disabilities to be included in the community,” said Muchena.
“Every participant will get a medal, a race pack and a T-shirt.
“Cash prizes will be given to the winners and entertainment for the event will be provided by the City of Harare Municipal Police Band.”
