THE City of Kings continued to rule the roost on the boxing arena scooping 29 gold medals at the Zimbabwe National Amateur Boxing Open Championships at Imbizo Barracks in Bulawayo on Saturday night. Bulawayo has been a driving force in the sport for the last 50 years with several star boxing icons coming from its clubs.
Having produced good boxers like Thembani Nyoni, Joyful Mahlangu, Eddie Ndlovu, Ambrose Mlilo, Nokuthula Tshabangu, Freddie Chisoro,
Fundisi Moyo, Ntando Sibanda, Meluleki Ngulube, Ndumiso Mabhena, Mordicai Donga, Stephen Masiyambumbi and Foster Masiyambumbi, hopes were high that city boxers would live up to it.
Six clubs represented the city at the event.
The clubs were Recruit Training Depot, Nketa, Nkulumane, One Brigade, Lobengula and Tshabalala.
Masvingo, Mashonaland Central and Zimbabwe National Army scooped seven gold medals each while Matabeleland South had four.
Midlands were last with only two gold medals.
The event started on Saturday evening and ran until Sunday morning with over 200 boxers in attendance.
The highlight of the tournament was Bulawayo-born pugilist Brighton Masiyambumbi who made light work of Bongani Siziba in the welterweight category.
In the women’s category Amanda Dube and Princess Msipa stole the show against Recruits’ Noster Kanyanya and Esnath Katsande who are seasoned boxers at the military school.
Zimbabwe Amateur Boxing Association technical director Petros Masiyambumbi said he was amazed by the performance of the two.
“The two female boxers were excellent considering that they won against Recruits who are physically fitter than them. No doubt they should be roped into the Zone Six team,” said Petros.
He praised Bulawayo boxers for their efforts in the ring.
“Our hard work, dedication and passion have been proven in the ring, the performance was excellent,” said Petros.
He believes Bulawayo lived up to expectations like it proved in the National Youth Games when it scooped 10 of 11 medals in boxing.
