City of Mutare calls for sustainable urban agricultural practices

Blessing Chafesuka
From The Town Clerk’s Desk

HELLO there, hope I find you well!

This week, our focus is on sustainable urban agriculture practices.

The summer season is upon us and we encourage those who want to practice urban agriculture in Mutare to adopt sustainable farming practices to protect our land from environmental degradation. The City has designated certain pieces of land for urban agriculture, and only these areas may be used for cultivation. We understand that urban agriculture can be a powerful tool for sustainability, but must be practiced responsibly to preserve the environment, considering climate change and its far-reaching consequences.
As a City, we have identified pieces of land that can be utilised for urban agriculture. We call upon all residents who wish to practise sustainable urban agriculture to visit our Housing and Community Services Department and discuss their farming requirements for possible allocation of land for such purposes.
It is worthy to note that cultivation is not allowed in the following areas:
• Land within 30 metres from stream banks
• Tilling /cultivation within 10 meters of the road
• No sloppy /uphill cultivation
• Land that has been surveyed for residential and industrial development.
• Wetlands
Anyone found cultivating in these areas runs the risk of being prosecuted or having his/her crops slashed. We will be running several awareness campaigns on this topic and we encourage our residents and stakeholders to take heed and comply.
For more information visit our Housing and Community Services Offices at 16 Chimanimani Road, Sakubva, Mutare to obtain permits to practice agriculture in designated areas or contact them on 02020 60823.

As we strive to improve service delivery and move towards achieving the ideals of a Smart City concept for Mutare, I want to assure you that my office is open for engagement with residents and stakeholders. Our goal is to work collaboratively to enhance the quality of life for our residents and make Mutare a better place to live, work, and visit. I encourage residents and stakeholders to engage with my office, share their ideas, and provide feedback on how we can improve our services and achieve our Smart City vision.

Share comments and feedback via our WhatsApp platform +263 775 792 461.

Join us every Wednesday on our weekly current affairs radio programme “Our City Wednesdays” on Diamond FM Radio from 1915hrs to 2000hrs.

Together, we will make our City great.
