THE National University of Science and Technology (Nust) will play host to the 12th edition of the Chancellor’s Games set for June 16-23.
All State Universities and Africa University, a private university will converge at (Nust) to participate in various sporting disciplines in the 12th edition of the Chancellor of Zimbabwe State Universities Staff Games.It is the 12th edition as the Games were not held last year.
The theme for the Games is “Higher Education a vehicle to innovate and industrialise the Nation”. Mapfumo Tafirenyika, the national vice chairperson of the national organising committee, said that the competition is held annually in honour of the Chancellor of all State universities President Mnangagwa for his visionary leadership in spearheading education. he is also the patron of the Games.
Tafirenyika said that the executive committee is delighted to invite residents of the City of Kings and Queens to the forthcoming Universities Staff Games extravaganza at Nust.
Teams will compete in various sporting disciplines including soccer, volleyball, basketball, netball, javelin, shot put, athletics, pool, table and lawn tennis, darts, chess, tug-of-war and cultural dance.
“The 12th edition is unique in that traditional sporting disciplines have been included. These are tsoro (morabaraba) and nhodo.
The disciplines resonate well with the Heritage-Based Education 5.0 trajectory,” said Tafirenyika.
He said that a golf tournament will be hosted on June 22 at Harry Allen Golf Club in Bulawayo.
“Proceeds realised from the golf tournament will be channelled towards assisting Nust in the construction of a Paralympic sporting infrastructure,” he said.
This event affords stakeholders a unique opportunity to network, interact and create everlasting relationships.“As the organising committee of the Games, we are kindly inviting all corporates in Bulawayo and around the country, civic organisations and interested partners, to come and partner with us to make the Games a success,” said Tafirenyika.
