Civil society groups yesterday complimented Government efforts in lobbying for the removal of illegal sanctions imposed on the country by the West.
The anti-sanctions workshop was held in Mbare on Friday, with the aim of enlightening youths on the effects of the illegal embargo and also served as a build up for the upcoming anti-sanctions day slated for October 25.
Speaking at the workshop, Zimbabwe Citizens Forum (ZFC) National Coordinator Mr Taurai Kandishaya said sanctions were a hindrance on Zimbabwe’s economic progress and the youth in Zimbabwe should work together in the fight against the illegal embargo.
“We are in full support of Government and SADC as a whole to fight against the illegal sanctions that have been imposed on us by the West,” he said.
Speaking at the same event, Civic Society and Churches Joint Forum (CSCJF), national coordinator Abigail Mupambi said it is of paramount importance for everyone to support President Mnangagwa in his quest to have the sanctions lifted.
“I believe that youths have control of Zimbabwe’s future because change starts with them and they are the most affected. It is very difficult for Zimbabwe to become a better place if these sanctions are not removed.
“It is important for each and every one of us to support the President and put away political differences and fight the sanctions. It is everyone’s responsibility to leave a legacy for future generations.
“Zimbabwe is a sovereign and independent country with independent voices. Together we can unite and say no to sanctions,” she said.
Labour, Economists and African Democrats party president Linda Masarira-Kaingidze urged opposition parties to work hand in glove with Government towards the uplifting of sanctions instead of aiding their imposition.
“We need to build political tolerance. Our enemy is not the Government but the sanctions imposed on us.
“As far as I know, the opposition party should not throw spanners at the existing Government but should support it,” she said.
Sadc countries have declared October 25 as solidarity day against illegal sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe and resolved to conduct various activities in their respective countries on that day to resoundingly call for the immediate removal of the sanctions.
